How We Do It

Using adventure-based learning and leadership development, PLAY camps equip children to choose a positive direction for their lives and return to their schools as Christ-centered, servant- hearted leaders. PLAY helps them discover their unique gifts and develop their skills to make wise decisions and influence those around them – to use peer pressure as a force for good!

Our method

PLAY partners with schools in disadvantaged areas of South Africa. For each camp, two schools are invited to attend – a township or rural school and an urban area school, bringing children together from different races, cultures, and socioeconomic class. Each school nominates 28 students who will be trained as the Grade 7 leaders at their school.  These 56 students return to their schools after camp as courageous leaders of integrity.

As Grade 7 leaders, students in Grades 1-6 all look up to them and want to be just like them.  By training leaders, you can reach not just 56 children but an entire school who is now being led in a positive direction!

Camp is free to attend and everything they need to succeed is provided: transport, food, lodging, Tshirt, waterbottle, bag, tennis shoes and Bible.

Our Name

PLAY stands for Purpose Leadership Adventure for Youth

Purpose – our curriculum is based on The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Knowing God has a plan for your life and wants a personal relationship with you is a crucial source of strength and hope for children who really need it.

Leadership – we use activities designed to instill character to stand up for what is right and speak out against what is wrong. Skills developed include teamwork, goal setting, problem solving, communication, and conflict resolution.

Adventure – we challenge campers to step out of their comfort zone. Pushing personal limits builds self confidence – you must believe in yourself to know that you can be that 1 in 3 that graduates from high school. You must believe in yourself to have the courage to fight for change in your community and country.

PLAY also teaches a lesson called “You Have Rights as a Person of Value” which addresses sexual assault and abuse. We cover topics such as: what are your rights and how to enforce them, consent, how to treat others with dignity and respect, what to do if you have been raped or assaulted, and the importance of reporting and receiving treatment and counseling.
